Overview:  The Senior Medical Editor’s primary responsibility is to provide high-level editorial expertise when reviewing complex written material, as well as to ensure the highest level of grammatical correctness,  factual accuracy, and overall quality of all assigned jobs by working in concert with other departments across DDB Health (especially Copy/Art/Account) from project initiation through final production.


Materials will include both print and digital jobs, such as printed visual aids and journal ads as well as interactive conference panels and iPad applications.



  • Serve as lead editor on assigned brands and as backup for other editors as necessary
  • Demonstrate deep knowledge into assigned brands’ therapeutic area, drug profile, primary reference material/data, indication, core claims, and client particulars, as well as FDA regulatory requirements; serve as the “go-to” Editorial ambassador for assigned brands
  • Attend all brand status meetings and any other relevant or required team meetings
  • Participate in department night shift rotation 2-3 nights per month and demonstrate a firm command of work priorities, deadlines, needs and workflow; resolve any problems that may arise during night shift
  • Perform cold reads (sense/spell/grammar reads without back up), initial edits (styling per AMA and/or client style, proofreading of references, proofreading approved ISI, checking that the piece meets FDA reqs, etc), fact-checks for accuracy of all claims vs references, and correction checks/slugs of materials
  • Exhibit a thorough understanding of internal agency workflow process, as well as external client and med-legal submissions and review processes
  • Work closely and professionally with account executives, copywriters, art directors, and other team members to ensure that materials are of the highest quality in terms of accuracy, utility, clarity, readability, and appeal; resolve any content/referencing issues
  • Work proactively with project management to communicate any issues on projects and brainstorm solutions
  • Regularly review project timelines and hotsheets to ensure ED steps are included and anticipate and communicate any potential editorial conflicts or issues that might impact timing
  • Create and maintain comprehensive style guide for each assigned brand
  • Assist fellow editors with their brands by reviewing any overflow work when possible

  • Serve as a professional mentor and example to junior editors
  • Demonstrate leadership in regards to training or new initiatives in the department

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications or a related field; science, marketing or health courses a plus
  • Experience (3-5 years) copyediting in a pharmaceutical advertising agency, in-house agency, or medical publishing company preferred
  • Firm knowledge of AMA Manual of Style, 10th edition
  • In-depth knowledge of FDA guidelines and regulatory requirements
  • Thorough understanding of scientific terminology
  • Ability to analyze abstract data from high-science support material and ensure its accuracy in the current assignment
  • Articulate oral and written communication skills essential
  • Curiosity/interest in medical topics preferred
  • Knowledge of project parameters to help other departments work with Editorial in regard to timelines and project goals
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Adeptness with Adobe Acrobat commenting/markups for electronic routing
  • Ability to work productively with others in a calm, mature, and professional manner at all times
